Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State believes the policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration have significantly benefited Nigeria, even though the administration inherited a state of near dormancy.
In an interview on Channels TV, Governor Abiodun expressed optimism about the long-term positive impact of Tinubu’s economic reforms, implemented since assuming office in May 2023. These policies, including the floating of the naira and the removal of fuel subsidy, have faced criticism due to the resultant increased costs of fuel and food, leading to hardships for Nigerians.
Abiodun acknowledged the audacity of President Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing that they have tackled challenges head-on and undertaken unprecedented measures not seen in Nigeria’s history. He specifically pointed to the deregulation efforts aimed at saving Nigerians, even amid substantial petroleum price differentials.
Highlighting the dire situation inherited by President Tinubu, Governor Abiodun defended the necessity of deregulation, stating, “He has inherited an administration that was almost comatose.” Despite the immediate economic challenges and rising living costs, Abiodun expressed confidence that Tinubu, given his background as a former governor, senator, and accountant, would successfully steer the country towards economic recovery.
“You know our President, besides being a former governor and a senator, he is also an accountant,” Abiodun said. “So, he is someone who is very spot on, and all hands are on deck to turn this economy around. We are very hopeful, and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Abiodun’s statements come shortly after the Court of Appeal in Lagos affirmed his reelection as the duly elected Governor of Ogun State.
