Africa’s leading entertainment company, MultiChoice, organized an anti-piracy roundtable event, ‘Piracy Untells Our Stories,’ to address the growing challenges posed by piracy. The event, held in Lagos on November 22, aimed to foster collaboration among key stakeholders, develop strategies, and find solutions in the ongoing battle against content theft, which has severe implications for industries, leading to revenue loss and job cuts.
The event facilitated in-depth discussions, knowledge sharing, and the formulation of effective countermeasures to combat piracy in the digital age. Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts against piracy, noting that piracy takes away the hard work of content producers. She urged industry leaders to join forces, share insights, and develop strategies to fortify defenses against content theft.
During a panel discussion, Victor Okhai, President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, highlighted the importance of effective communication in the fight against piracy, emphasizing the need to tailor messaging to the understanding of the common man. Legal Practitioner and Intellectual Property Expert, Obafemi Agaba, stressed the significance of making people understand the dangers of piracy, advocating for funding of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in the fight against piracy.
Other panel members included Charles Amudipe, Deputy Director of Operations at the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) Lagos, and Chinenye Nworah, Producer of Slum King. The company recently received the prestigious Promax Awards 2023 for its campaign, ‘Piracy Untells Our Stories.
