Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has signed a bill into law, extending the retirement age for teachers employed by the state government to 65 years. The bill also increased the service years for teachers from 35 to 40 years.
Governor Uzodimma, during the signing ceremony, emphasized that the new law aims to motivate teachers in the state’s public schools, encouraging them to be more committed and serious about their jobs. He expressed confidence that the extension would provide teachers with a sense of job security, fostering increased effectiveness and efficiency in their roles.
In exercising his constitutional powers, Governor Uzodimma assented to the bill, highlighting its significance in enhancing the welfare of teachers in Imo State.
The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chike Olemgbe, commended the governor for prioritizing the welfare of the people. The bill was passed by the House after the third reading on November 16, following its submission as an Executive Bill. The governor and the legislative body expressed optimism that the new law would contribute to a more robust and motivated teaching workforce in the state.
