Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare financing and accountability, particularly in the context of vaccine and immunization programs in Nigeria. The statement was made during a high-level strategic meeting on Gavi Alliance support to the Nigerian government at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Shettima, the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is unwaveringly committed to redefining the concept of modern leadership in Nigeria, with a special focus on the welfare of its citizens. Despite facing fiscal and monetary challenges, the Vice President expressed confidence in finding solutions, emphasizing the administration’s determination to prioritize the nation’s well-being.
Shettima applauded the Gavi Alliance for its significant contributions to improving vaccine coverage in Nigeria, noting a substantial increase from 33% to 57% since 2016. He acknowledged Gavi’s crucial role in the country’s efforts to eradicate polio, highlighting the last reported case in 2016.
Expressing gratitude for Gavi’s assistance, the Vice President specifically mentioned the organization’s support in strengthening vaccine supply chain management and cold chain infrastructure. He emphasized the instrumental role these measures played in ensuring the availability and accessibility of vaccines to all Nigerians.
Soliciting Gavi’s continued support, Shettima outlined Nigeria’s plans for post-pandemic recovery and the integration of immunization services into broader health strategies. He stressed the need to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on immunization programs and to build resilient health systems.
The Vice President concluded by expressing gratitude for Gavi’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s immunization efforts and looked forward to continued collaboration with Gavi and other stakeholders to achieve universal immunization coverage and ensure the well-being of all Nigerians.
