The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed plans to discontinue the operation of tricycles, popularly known as Keke Napep, in certain areas of Abuja. Wike also assured residents that measures would be implemented to address the issue of one-chance criminal activities in the capital.

Wike stated that Keke Napep would no longer operate in Asokoro and Maitama, with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) introducing buses and taxis as alternative transportation solutions. He emphasized the need to tackle both transportation challenges and the involvement of some Keke Napep operators in criminal activities.

“These buses and taxis will ply all the routes in Asokoro and Maitama. We are kicking out Keke Napep, at least in these areas. Some of these Keke Napep are agents of criminals,” Wike asserted.

Highlighting the convenience and efficiency of buses, Wike expressed the belief that people would prefer commuting from their areas to work and back. While addressing Estate Developers and Residents Associations in the FCT, the minister called on residents to cooperate with the FCDA by fulfilling their tax obligations.

“It is painful, but it’s an inconvenience that we must face,” Wike added, emphasizing the collective effort required to enhance the city’s transportation and security landscape.
