Passport Services Resume in U.S. as FG Resolves Production Crisis

The Federal Government has announced the resumption of passport services at the three Missions, bringing relief to impacted applicants, as part of a satisfactory resolution to the passport production problem in the United States.

A public notice posted in the Embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC, conveyed the information, specifying that all passport applicants initially scheduled for biometric capture from Monday, November 13, to Thursday, November 16, have been rescheduled. The new dates for biometric capture are Monday, November 20, to Wednesday, November 22, 2023, and applicants are welcome on any of these days.

The issue, reportedly internet-related rather than a server problem, affected passport services in New York and Atlanta as well. A confidential source shared that the system was fixed and tested on Saturday, ensuring the restoration of services in all centers.

The embassy in Washington DC serves as the sole passport production center in the U.S., with the consulates in New York and Atlanta handling biometrics and forwarding the data to Washington DC for passport production.

The resolution comes after collaborative efforts between experts in Nigeria and local ICT experts at the Embassy, addressing the internet-related challenges that disrupted passport services.

In a related development, the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians and its 20 partner organizations in New York had earlier urged the Federal Government to provide passport production machines for Missions in Atlanta and New York. The New York consulate, covering the highest number of states and accepting a significant volume of applications, lacked dedicated passport printing machines, prompting calls for equitable distribution.

As services resume, the Federal Government aims to ensure smoother operations and accessibility for passport applicants across the United States. The New York Jurisdiction, covering 20 states, including Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, stands to benefit from the resolved passport production crisis.
