Former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of President Jimmy Carter, peacefully passed away at the age of 96 on Sunday at the couple’s home in Plains, Georgia, as announced by their nonprofit organization, the Carter Center.

Known for her post-White House advocacy in human rights, democracy, and health issues worldwide, Rosalynn Carter played a significant role alongside her husband while maintaining a notably humble public image. She had been under at-home hospice care since Friday after being diagnosed with dementia in May.

Born on August 18, 1927, in Plains, Rosalynn Carter grew up facing challenges after her father’s death at the age of 13. Despite these hardships, she became a tireless advocate and a partner in her husband’s political career.

Meeting Jimmy Carter in 1945 while in college, they married in 1946, establishing records for the longest-wed presidential couple and, at 99, making Jimmy Carter the oldest living US president.

Rosalynn Carter’s impact extended beyond the traditional role of a first lady. During Jimmy Carter’s presidency from 1977 to 1981, she actively participated in policy matters, attending Cabinet meetings, major briefings, and representing the Chief Executive at ceremonial occasions.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden paid tribute, stating, “Through rigors of campaigns, through the darkness of deep and profound loss — we always felt the hope, warmth, and optimism of Rosalynn Carter.”

Fellow Democrats Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton expressed deep gratitude for Carter’s service, emphasizing her compassion and commitment to human dignity.

Former first ladies Michelle Obama and Melania Trump also acknowledged Carter’s legacy. Obama remembered her advice and helping hand during White House years, while Trump praised her servant’s heart and devotion to family and country.

Rosalynn Carter is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. The Carter family shared that her humanitarian legacy will be greatly missed, emphasizing her impact on mental health care and caregiving resources.

The passing of Rosalynn Carter comes after the family announced Jimmy Carter’s entry into hospice care in February. Despite health challenges, the former president has continued to engage in the Carter Center’s humanitarian work and enjoy moments of joy, such as indulging in ice cream, surprising many with his resilience.
