Former Vice President Joseph Boakai, the Unity Party candidate, has emerged victorious over incumbent President George Weah in Liberia’s presidential election’s second round of voting.

The outcome, with 99.58% of votes counted from 5,890 polling places, leaves no room for doubt about Boakai’s unassailable lead.

Boakai commands a substantial lead with 814,212 votes out of the available 1,625,684, surpassing Weah’s 785,778 votes from the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change. With a voter turnout of 65.77%, the election marks a significant moment in Liberia’s political landscape.

As of 4 pm on Friday, Boakai’s lead over Weah stands at 28,434 votes, and with 25,694 ballots still outstanding for counting, it is mathematically impossible for the former footballer to bridge the gap, solidifying Boakai’s impending victory.

The electoral journey, marked by the first inconclusive round on October 10 among 20 presidential candidates, ultimately led to the runoff between Weah and Boakai, the top two contenders. Boakai’s triumph reflects a shift in popular sentiment and sets the stage for a new chapter in Liberia’s political trajectory.
