The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed its confidence in securing a significant victory in the event of a rerun election in compliance with the Court of Appeal’s directive.

In a telephone interview with reporters in Gusau, the state capital, Buhari Maijega, the spokesperson for the State’s PDP, conveyed optimism about Governor Dauda Lawal emerging triumphant in the rerun election. Maijega pointed out that in the previous gubernatorial election, Lawal held a lead of over 65,000 votes against his APC opponent, former Governor Bello Mattawalle. Emphasizing that the total votes at stake in the three affected local government areas for the rerun election were less than 100,000, Maijega deemed it highly unlikely for the APC to secure all votes.

He cited potential security challenges that might hinder a substantial voter turnout, particularly in rural areas affected by banditry. Maijega asserted, “Governor Lawal has a strong chance of prevailing over former Governor Bello Mattawalle for several reasons. He already secured a lead of 65,000 votes against the immediate past Governor Mattawalle.” Maijega hinted at the possibility of Lawal challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision at the Supreme Court, implying a formidable legal battle for Mattawalle.

Appealing to APC members and supporters to turn out in large numbers, Maijega highlighted that the rerun election would take place in a few polling units in Maradun, Bukkuyum, and Birnin Magaji local government areas. He expressed confidence, stating, “Even if the PDP refrains from active campaigning, I am optimistic that Dr. Dauda Lawal will secure additional votes in those three local governments and maintain his governorship position. I urge our supporters to remain calm; with the grace of God, we will prevail.”
