In a media briefing at the national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, Umar Damagum, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), raised serious allegations, asserting that a cabal within the Presidency is orchestrating plans to subvert the democratic rights of Nigerians. Damagum claimed that this group is working towards manipulating the political landscape to favor the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking passionately, Damagum accused the APC of engaging in a systematic effort to “cripple democracy, overthrow the democratic rights of Nigerians, suppress the rule of law, and downgrade our nation to a fiefdom run by the whims of a cabal.” According to him, there is an ongoing design by the APC to compromise democratic institutions, particularly targeting the judiciary, in their relentless pursuit to undermine and overturn the expressed will of Nigerians in various election matters.

The PDP National Chairman emphasized the urgency of alerting Nigerians to the growing threat of the country sliding into totalitarianism. He expressed concern about the activities of the alleged cabal in the Presidency, highlighting their attempts to weaken institutions crucial to the democratic process. Damagum singled out the judiciary as a prime target, emphasizing the desperation of the cabal to manipulate election outcomes.

This assertion aligns with earlier statements from the PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, who also accused the same cabal of attempting to push Nigeria into a state of anarchy and totalitarianism. Ologunagba claimed that the cabal is strategically utilizing bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary to sow chaos and disrupt the democratic fabric of the nation.

As these allegations unfold, the political landscape in Nigeria is becoming increasingly charged, with the PDP leadership sounding the alarm over what they perceive as a threat to the foundational principles of democracy. The coming days may shed more light on the veracity of these claims and their potential implications for the political climate in the country.
