Labour Party Dismisses Merger Rumors, Calls Media Reports Manipulated

The Labour Party (LP) has categorically denied recent news reports suggesting a merger arrangement with any political party, urging Nigerians to disregard the circulating information. Mr. Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, made this statement on Thursday in Abuja, addressing what he described as manipulated and sensationalized news aimed at causing embarrassment to the party.

Ifoh clarified that the only response from the Labour Party to the call by Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for parties to merge was a proposal advocating for Nigerians’ collective interest in making democracy function effectively. He emphasized that the present political landscape in Nigeria resembles an autocracy rather than a true democracy.

Addressing the media reports, Ifoh stated that nowhere in his response did he mention a purported merger between the Labour Party and the PDP. He underscored that the Labour Party had recently concluded the 2023 general election, and a post-mortem session to discuss the party’s future direction was yet to be conducted.

“When we do, Nigerians will be properly informed,” he assured.

The statement comes in response to Atiku Abubakar’s earlier call for various opposition parties to consider forming a merger, expressing concern about the potential drift towards a one-party state in Nigeria. However, the Labour Party asserts that discussions regarding its future direction and any potential alliances will be conducted transparently and responsibly, ensuring that Nigerians are well-informed about the party’s decisions and strategies.
