Tragedy struck Gombe State as the 2023 flood disaster unfolded, leaving three individuals dead and 22 others injured, according to Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi, the Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency. The aftermath of the disaster, which occurred in eight out of the 11 local government areas of the state, includes the loss of seven animals, the destruction of 1,838 houses, and damage to 257 farmlands between May and October 2023.

Contrary to the 2023 Flood Outlook, which predicted impacts on three local government areas, the worst-hit regions include Akko, Funakaye, Balanga, Gombe, Nafada, Kaltungo, Shongom, and Yamaltu/Deba. Abdullahi reported that heavy rains accompanied by strong windstorms ravaged farmlands, causing substantial losses for farmers in the affected communities.

In response to the disaster, the government, led by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, has taken steps to provide relief to victims. Relief materials have been distributed to ease the suffering of those affected, and ongoing efforts aim to extend support to all impacted communities. Abdullahi emphasized that additional reports of flooding in remaining areas are being addressed, and the agency has sought support from the National Emergency Management Agency and the North East Development Commission to aid victims.

Despite the significant losses incurred, Abdullahi noted a reduction in the loss of lives, attributing this positive outcome to effective awareness campaigns and sensitization activities. The agency responded promptly after receiving a flood alert from NiMet (Nigerian Meteorological Agency) and NASA, contributing to heightened awareness among residents.

Commending the state government’s support for flood victims, Abdullahi appealed for patience from those yet to receive assistance, assuring them that the state government and relevant agencies are actively working to extend aid to all affected communities.
