Abia State Government Shuts Down 197 Private Schools for Substandard Operations

The Abia state government has closed 197 of the 900 private schools it assessed for performing below the minimal standard as part of an effort to improve the education system. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, provided this information during a briefing on the outcomes of the executive council meeting in Umuahia, the state capital. Kanu stressed that the ongoing inspections are part of the administration’s commitment to improving educational quality.

Additionally, the government is making strides in road rehabilitation and reconstruction across the state. Kanu reported that six roads in Aba are ready for inauguration by Governor Dr. Alex Otti. He also highlighted directives for the Ministry of Works to undertake repairs on Fimbars Road and address the deplorable conditions along Ahiaeke – Lodu Ndume-Umuafai Road in Umuahia.

Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, the Commissioner for Health, shared that over 8,000 state residents have benefited from free medical services provided by the administration. As part of efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure, the administration is retrofitting the Cottage Hospital Abayi Aba, with plans to reopen it soon.

Addressing the recent nomination of local government transition committee chairmen, Hon Uzor Nwachukwu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted the normalcy of the process. Notable nominees include Chief David Ogba, chairman/founder of Bourdex Group Ltd; Ide John Udeagbala, chairman/CEO of J. Udeagbala Holdings Nig Ltd; and AVM Chiwendu Onyike (rtd). Nwachukwu expressed optimism about unprecedented development in every local government, marking a significant initiative in the state’s history under Governor Otti’s leadership.
