A coalition of 35 domestic election monitoring groups, overseeing the November 11 governorship election in Imo State, has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting what they describe as a “sterling and credible election.” The group, led by Comrade Victor Kalu, expressed satisfaction with the improvements in INEC’s performance, emphasizing the adherence to international standards.
In a joint statement, the coalition highlighted the increased efficiency and effectiveness demonstrated by INEC at every stage of the electoral process. They commended the security agencies for their professional conduct during the election, acknowledging the seamless distribution of election materials and the absence of transportation hitches.
The coalition, including organizations like the Grassroot Development and Peace Initiative, Center for Development and Transformation Initiative, and Global Development Center for Rescue Mission in Nigeria, emphasized that the election provided an opportunity for INEC to address public complaints and issues arising from the 2023 Nigeria General Election.
Comrade Victor Kalu, the head of the Grassroots Development and Peace Initiative, on behalf of the coalition, stated, “There was an obvious improvement on the part of INEC in ensuring a credible, free, fair, and transparent election in Imo state.” He praised the timely distribution of election materials, noting that it facilitated a smooth and timely commencement of the election in all polling units.
The group commended the security situation, highlighting the unexpected peace and safety during the election, especially considering earlier rumors of insecurity. They applauded the security agents for their articulated and professional networking, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere.
The coalition also recognized the seamless result collation process, accurate tabulation, and peaceful declaration of the winner. They observed strict compliance with the use of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) as stipulated by the Electoral Act and Guidelines for the election.
On the conduct of political parties, the coalition noted the participation of eighteen parties, emphasizing the keenly contested vote. They praised the people of Imo for their massive turnout and peaceful exercise of their franchise. The group urged the winner, incumbent Governor Hope Uzodimma, to engage all segments of society and exhibit kindness in victory. Additionally, they appealed to other candidates to show good sportsmanship, highlighting the democratic spirit of exploring legal channels to address grievances.
Concluding their assessment, the coalition characterized the Imo State Governorship Election as peaceful, transparent, credible, and in line with democratic tenets, urging all stakeholders to accept the results as a true reflection of the voters’ will.
