The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a statewide strike, which will begin at midnight on November 13 in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC). This strategic decision was expressed by ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, reinforcing the union’s alliance with the NLC and its unshakable commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian workers.
A letter, dispatched to all union zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons by Prof Osodeke, calls for the immediate mobilization of ASUU members to actively participate in the joint strike action. This directive underscores the belief in the collective strength of a united front, with the conviction that “a people united cannot be defeated.”
This development is a significant extension of the ongoing nationwide strike initiated by the NLC and TUC the previous week. The initial catalyst for this broader labor action was the perceived mistreatment of NLC President Joe Ajaero during a worker’s protest in Imo State. ASUU’s alignment with this larger labor movement amplifies the resonance of their shared concerns and emphasizes the need for a unified response in addressing issues affecting workers’ rights and well-being.
As the strike unfolds, its implications extend beyond immediate grievances, sparking a broader discourse on the role of collective action in influencing change and advocating for the rights of workers across various sectors.
