Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State on Saturday performed his civic duty by voting in an unnamed primary school that is still operational but has fallen into disrepair—a startling turn of events.

In a viral video, Diri cast his ballot in a polling place at an unidentified public primary school in Kalamaowei Ward 6 in the Kolokuma/Opkuma Local Government Area of the state, which was obviously unsuitable for learning and had no ceiling.

The public’s outrage and worries over the priorities of those in positions of authority and the state of public infrastructure have been aroused by the deteriorating state of the school where the governor cast his vote.

The incident unfolded as Governor Diri, accompanied by a swarm of media personnel, arrived at the polling station set up in the rundown school building. The juxtaposition of a functioning election process within the crumbling walls of the educational institution has ignited a wave of criticism from residents and the broader public alike.  The irony of a governor voting in a location symbolic of the state’s public schools’ overall neglect is highlighted by the locals, who voice their profound unhappiness.

As many advocacy groups have noted, the tragedy has served as a sobering reminder of how urgently attention has to be focused on the revitalization of educational infrastructure.

Critics argue that Governor Diri’s choice to cast his vote in such a setting highlights the disparities between the promises made by politicians during election campaigns and the actual implementation of policies that address the basic needs of the people. The dilapidated state of the school stands as a tangible symbol of unfulfilled commitments to education and infrastructure development.

Reacting to this development, Oluseun Onigbinde, the director of BudgIT wrote on X (formerly Twitter) “Multi-billion Naira revenues. Primary school without a ceiling.”

Also, Chinedu Onyegbula wrote “Sometimes I wonder if they have any shame or that they’ve so much lost touch that they don’t see how wrong this is. Even if it’s not developed in other parts of your state, at the minimum, you could have done something at your polling unit. I’m tired.”

As the images of Governor Diri casting his vote circulate on social media, citizens are demanding accountability and immediate action to address the deplorable state of public schools in Bayelsa State. Many are calling for a comprehensive review of the government’s priorities and resource allocation to ensure that essential services, particularly education, are not overshadowed by other political agendas.
