Argentine football maestro Diego Pablo Simeone, commonly known as “El Cholo,” has signed an extension contract with Atletico Madrid, keeping him in charge until June 2027. Simeone’s powerful term, which began in December 2011, will be extended significantly with this announcement.
The 53-year-old tactician has etched his name in Atletico’s history, amassing an impressive record of 380 victories in his 642 matches in charge. Simeone’s illustrious reign has seen Atletico clinch eight trophies under his guidance, making him the most successful manager in the club’s storied history.
Among his notable achievements, Simeone guided Atletico Madrid to La Liga triumphs in 2014 and 2021, securing their position as Spanish football champions. The Europa League also graced the club’s trophy cabinet in 2012 and 2018, while the Copa del Rey was captured in 2013. Despite finishing as runners-up in the Champions League in 2014 and 2016, Simeone’s impact on the team has been undeniable.
As of now, Atletico Madrid sits comfortably in fourth place in the Spanish top flight and leads their Champions League group with two matches remaining, reflecting the continued competitiveness instilled by Simeone.
Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the contract extension, underlining the significance of the deal. Romano stated, “Official: Diego Simeone signs new long-term deal at Atlético Madrid, valid until June 2027. The agreement has been sealed today with El Cholo, new salary terms agreed. From 2011… to 2027,” further emphasizing the enduring partnership between Simeone and the club over an extended horizon.
