The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, has stressed the need of focusing on the poor, needy, and vulnerable in a demand for a more targeted distribution of the Federal Government’s N5 billion palliative handouts to states. According to Archbishop Kaigama, the goal of this method is to mitigate the impact of subsidy elimination on the most vulnerable segments of society.
Addressing attendees at the 4th Abuja Archdiocesan General Assembly, themed “Marriage and Family in Contemporary Society,” Archbishop Kaigama advocated for a shift from mere financial assistance to a more sustainable empowerment strategy. He stressed the importance of providing families with the necessary support and resources to engage in viable entrepreneurial endeavors, fostering self-reliance and economic independence.
Archbishop Kaigama’s plea is rooted in the belief that empowering families through government assistance will have a more lasting impact than solely relying on grants and palliative care. By directing financial aid towards initiatives that promote self-sufficiency, the Archbishop envisions a positive ripple effect on the overall well-being of communities affected by the subsidy removal.
Furthermore, he urged families to uphold the law and embrace patriotism as essential values. Expressing concern over the disproportionate involvement of young people in criminal activities, Archbishop Kaigama emphasized the role of families in shaping the ethical foundation of society.
