Warren Zaire-Emery, a 17-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, is set to become France’s youngest international player in 112 years, according to coach Didier Deschamps. The inclusion of Zaire-Emery in the roster for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the French national team’s youngest player since Felix Vial in 1911.
Deschamps voiced faith in Zaire-Emery’s ability during a press conference in Paris, noting his achievements with PSG as evidence of his fitness for the international stage. Despite competition in his position, the coach sees him as a strong contender for the next European Championships, which will be held in June and July 2024.
“At his age, he’s already shown great potential and maturity at just over 17,” Deschamps remarked, underlining Zaire-Emery’s remarkable talent and composure on the field.
The absence of Aurelien Tchouameni, who was injured while playing for Real Madrid against Barcelona in October, did not deter Zaire-Emery’s selection. Deschamps stated that Zaire-Emery’s inclusion was not only due to Tchouameni’s injury, emphasizing Zaire-Emery’s individual merit.
Despite the injury to N’Golo Kante, the 2018 World Cup winner who is currently playing in the Saudi league, Deschamps stated that the situation does not definitely conclude the debate, allowing opportunity for further considerations in the dynamic lineup of the French national team. The excitement surrounding Zaire-Emery’s debut represents not only his outstanding talent, but also the evolving history of France’s football.
