Mr. Ahmed Mohammed, the Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria (NTN), believes that traditional dance festivals play a pivotal role in promoting national unity and preserving the cultural identities of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday, Mohammed emphasized the significance of traditional religious festivals as an integral part of the Nigerian identity, notwithstanding the country’s remarkable diversity.

According to him, the spiritual essence of these festivals finds expression in the NTN’s dances, showcasing their beauty, vibrant colors, and the worldview of the worshipers. This, he believes, contributes to the cohesion and bonding of Nigerians as one people, despite their various backgrounds.

Furthermore, Mohammed stressed the importance of conducting extensive research to explore the potential of ritualistic festivals in fostering unity among Nigerians. He acknowledged the unfortunate reality that some of these festivals have been marred by violence and restrictions in certain communities, bringing pain to society.

The NTN, under Mohammed’s leadership, has undertaken a remarkable journey, touring over 40 countries worldwide, and showcasing Nigeria’s finest dances, music, and drama. Their performance of “Yemoja” even earned them the Best Drama prize at the 2002 Cervantino International Festival in Mexico.

The Troupe has left an indelible mark on various nations, including the United States, Japan, China, North and South Korea, Germany, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Brazil, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and most recently, in August, Antigua-Barbuda in the Caribbean. Through their diverse performances, the NTN has presented Nigeria as a cultural hub for the Black race, fostering a connection between Africans in the diaspora and Nigeria, while also drawing tourists to the country.

“We have also demonstrated Nigeria’s resilience to the world, the wax that bonded us in unity despite our diversity,” Mohammed concluded. The NTN’s global journey continues to serve as a powerful tool in celebrating Nigeria’s cultural richness and unity amidst diversity.
