On Monday night, a boat transporting farmers from Ubbe District in Nasarawa Eggon met with a sad accident while attempting to cross a river near Hunki village in Awe Local Government Area. The farmers were returning from their rice fields when the tragedy struck, resulting in the loss of several lives.
The victims, who have been identified as Alkali Congo, Shedrack Dauda, Mashack Dauda, and Akolo Moses, were caught in the unfortunate accident. Their bodies were recovered and have been transported back to their village to ensure proper identification by their respective families.
Confirming the incident, DSP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), offered insights into the unfortunate incident. He stated that local divers had managed to retrieve four corpses, but the boat’s driver remained unaccounted for.
Nansel reported, “It happened yesterday; the farmers were returning from the farm, and the boat capsized. With the support of local divers, four corpses were recovered, and one person was rescued. The person driving the boat is yet to be found, and efforts are ongoing to locate him.”
He also conveyed the Acting Commissioner of Police’s sympathies to the families of the deceased, praying for divine solace during this challenging time. The entire community is now dealing with the grief and repercussions of this terrible accident, which serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by those relying on river transportation for their livelihoods.
