Nigeria is poised to achieve a momentous milestone on Wednesday, November 08, 2023, with the highly anticipated unveiling of the e-CRVS system. This groundbreaking advancement underscores the nation’s unwavering commitment to bolster and enhance robust data management across diverse sectors.
During a pre-launch briefing held on Monday, November 6, 2023, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, unveiled the significance of this development. The e-CRVS system is poised to encompass a wide spectrum of civil registration activities, encompassing birth registration, stillbirth records, birth attestation, adoption, marriage and divorce notifications, migration records, and death registrations.
Kwarra emphasized the pivotal role of this digital system, reaffirming that its launch symbolizes the current government’s dedication to strengthening the collection, processing, dissemination, and timely access to statistics related to vital events within the country. This initiative is poised to drive the enhancement of Nigeria’s civil registration and vital statistics systems throughout the decade from 2023 to 2030, aligning with the country’s pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Notably, this initiative has come to fruition through a close collaboration between the National Population Commission and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This partnership has led to the development of an e-CRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report, highlighting the transformative potential of digital technologies in revolutionizing Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS). The digital system securely and cost-effectively integrates data from various systems at scale across Nigeria.
The e-CRVS system is set to issue digital certificates for all registered cases, offering accessible and verifiable platforms for relevant organizations. The introduction of a central management system, facilitated through a dashboard, will enable the analysis and interpretation of collated civil registrations into vital statistics. This innovative system aims to empower informed decision-making processes across diverse sectors within the country. It is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing digital technology for progress and development.
