Netflix’s ad-supported plans have been a wallet-friendly option for subscribers willing to endure occasional advertisements during their viewing experience. However, this feature can be frustrating for those who prefer uninterrupted binge-watching. In response to this, Netflix has announced a new initiative set to launch in 2024, aiming to provide ad-free episodes for binge-watchers.
Starting in the first quarter of 2024, Netflix will introduce a feature known as the “binge ad format.” This format is designed to cater to the viewing behavior of users who watch multiple episodes in succession. For every three consecutive episodes watched with ads, subscribers on ad-supported plans will have the opportunity to enjoy the fourth episode entirely ad-free.
Netflix’s decision to offer ad-free episodes is a response to the changing viewing habits and preferences of its subscribers. This innovative approach acknowledges the desire for uninterrupted content consumption while balancing it with the cost-saving benefits of ad-supported plans.
In addition to this development, Netflix provided an update on the performance of its ad-supported plan. Since its launch, the plan has gained 15 million monthly active users, demonstrating its appeal to viewers looking for a more affordable streaming option.
With recent price hikes announced for its Basic and Premium plans, the ad-supported plan is likely to become even more attractive to customers, especially in countries where it is available. On October 18, 2023, Netflix raised the price of its Premium plan to $22.99 (R425) and its Basic plan to $11.99 (R222). This makes the ad-supported plans a compelling choice for budget-conscious subscribers seeking access to Netflix’s vast library of content without breaking the bank.
