Hilda Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, a Nigerian famous chef, has revealed a heartbreaking narrative of her biological father, Effiong Bassey Edem, disowning her. On Tuesday, she revealed this during an interview on the ‘Tea with Tay’ podcast, hosted by Taymesan.
Discussing her complex relationship with her father, Hilda opened up about how he had been an active presence in their lives during their childhood. However, a significant turning point occurred when a heated argument between him and her mother profoundly affected their family.
Hilda explained, “One of the most significant moments for me was when he disowned me. It wasn’t a sudden abandonment; he had been part of our lives to some extent. But the reality hit me when my parents were going through a tough period, and I was in the midst of my second semester of the 300 level at the university.”
Recalling a poignant conversation with her father on a day as special as her matriculation ceremony, Hilda expressed her disappointment, saying, “I called him and asked why he didn’t bring any food for me. His response was, ‘Who’s your dad?’ It wasn’t until years later that I realized he wasn’t merely making a joke.”
