The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, disputing President Bola Tinubu’s election victory.

Obi had claimed, among other things, that Vice President Kashim Shettima’s double nomination made him ineligible to be Tinubu’s running partner.

The Supreme Court, however, declared that it would not revisit the issue of double nomination, as it had already issued a prior judgment on the matter. The court stated, “This matter ought not to have come here. When the matter was pending at the trial court, this court delivered judgment on it. This appeal lacks merit and is hereby dismissed.”

Obi’s appeal comprised a total of seven issues challenging the decision of the presidential election petition tribunal. In response to these grounds for appeal, Inyang Okoro, the head of the seven-member panel of judges, clarified that issues 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 had already been addressed in the ruling related to Atiku Abubakar’s appeal.

Earlier, the court had also rejected the appeal of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), further solidifying Bola Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election.
