The Federal Executive Council has granted approval for the establishment of the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund. This pioneering initiative, introduced during President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is hailed as a substantial step toward combating poverty and addressing humanitarian crises within the country.
The Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund serves as a flexible financial mechanism designed to enable Nigeria to respond effectively to humanitarian emergencies, internal displacement challenges, and poverty-related issues. It provides a readily accessible pool of funds contributed by the government, private sector, foreign nations, philanthropic individuals, and more, all aimed at bolstering national social safety programs for poverty alleviation and humanitarian emergency response. Notably, this innovative approach streamlines the process, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and positioning Nigeria on a global stage prepared for immediate action.
As part of the effort to ensure the success of this initiative, the government has commenced significant engagement with the private sector and other stakeholders to secure their participation and contributions to the Trust Fund. The Minister responsible for this initiative recently held discussions with key private sector representatives, including General Manager Policy, Govt, and Public Affairs Mr. Esimaje Brikinn and Mr. Sam Daibo, Director Government Affairs, following a productive meeting with Chevron’s President Clay Neff in New York during the UNGA78. Chevron has expressed its commitment to support Nigeria in humanitarian and poverty alleviation efforts, particularly in the Niger Delta region. Further discussions will outline the specifics of this partnership in upcoming meetings.
Additionally, the Minister met with Mr. Tobechukwu Okigbo, the Chief Corporate Services Officer, in preparation for discussions with the MTN Foundation. This strategic collaboration aims to secure support for the Trust Fund, with allocated funds directed toward humanitarian response and poverty alleviation in the country.
Furthermore, the Regional Head of UNHCR and the acting Country Director have reaffirmed their dedication to supporting the Nigerian government’s efforts to achieve positive outcomes in these critical areas. The establishment of the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund represents a transformative move toward addressing poverty and humanitarian challenges effectively, with a strong commitment from both public and private sectors and international partners.
