Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State announced the creation of the Anambra Special Anti-Touting Squad on Monday in a determined attempt to eradicate touts from the state. This programme, which was started in Upper-Iweka, Onitsha, marks the beginning of a concerted effort to combat touts in the state.
Governor Soludo left no room for ambiguity as he warned that the days of touts operating freely in the state were numbered. He emphasized the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate action.
Recognizing the challenge of restoring law and order in an environment where the activities of touts have long been the norm, Governor Soludo underscored the significance of this operation. He commended the selected members of the squad for offering their services and urged them to carry out their duties with unwavering dedication, zeal, and perseverance.
Furthermore, Governor Soludo advised the squad members to strictly adhere to established standards and the code of conduct governing their operations.
He stated, “Members of the anti-touting squad shall collaborate with the Nigerian Armed Forces, who bear the primary responsibility for maintaining the safety of the state. The launch of this squad marks a significant step toward fulfilling our key promise to the people living in the greater Onitsha area, including Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Ogbaru, Oyi, and Idemili, which is to restore Anambra State to its historical reputation as the ‘Light of the Nation.'”
Governor Soludo also issued a stern warning to all market chairmen, holding them accountable. He made it clear that market chairmen would be held responsible for any market where touts persisted, with the consequence of potential dismissal from their positions.
