President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given his approval for a monthly wage award of N35,000 to all Federal civil servants. This increase in salary is set to take effect from September 1, 2023, according to a memo from the Presidency. The circular, signed by Ekpo U. O. Nta, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, was addressed to several key government officials and institutions.

In the memo dated October 19, 2023, the President referenced a Memorandum of Understanding reached on October 2, 2023, between the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC). This agreement resulted from disputes arising from the removal of subsidies on the price of premium motor spirit (PMS).

The circular conveyed the President’s approval of a wage award of N35,000 per month to all Federal Government workers, pending the signing of a new national minimum wage into law. The increase will be applicable to all treasury-funded Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. The implementation of this wage award for non-treasury-funded Federal Government agencies will be drawn from their internally generated funds.
