The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) command has announced that the battle against illicit drugs and trafficking in Nigeria is showing significant progress.

Commander of Narcotics (CN) FCT, Kabir Tsakuwa, discussed these achievements during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Tsakuwa highlighted the extensive efforts made by the Federal Government in curbing illicit drug abuse and trafficking through all branches of government. Presently, approximately 2,500 cadets are undergoing training at the Regional Academy for Drug Control in Jos.

Additionally, another 2,500 cadets have recently completed training as Narcotic Agents and Narcotic Assistants at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) College in Katsina. These measures aim to strengthen the workforce of the agency in its fight against the drug menace.

He also mentioned that, in September, the agency hosted the 31st meeting of all Heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies, Africa (HONLAF) in Abuja, demonstrating the government’s strong support for the cause.

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to battling substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking by ensuring the provision of necessary tools to the NDLEA. Furthermore, the proposed amendment of the Agency Act, currently in its final stages at the National Assembly, is expected to enhance the nation’s efforts in the fight against drug-related issues. The amendments are set to introduce stringent punitive measures for drug offenses, reflecting the government’s dedication to addressing the evolving nature of drug trafficking.

Tsakuwa also praised the unwavering support received from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which has greatly assisted in eradicating drug peddlers from the territory, as well as black spots. The NDLEA FCT Command expressed its gratitude to the FCTA for its invaluable backing.

Tsakuwa assured the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, of the command’s commitment to eliminating drug abuse and illicit trade from the FCT and its surroundings. The collaborative efforts of the government, law enforcement agencies, and amendments to the legal framework have all played a significant role in the fight against the drug menace in Nigeria.
