Infant Abandoned, Discovered Dead in Abuja’s Bassa Community

In a shocking incident that unfolded early Thursday in the neighborhood of Channel 500, located along Airport Road in Bassa Community, Abuja, a lifeless newborn was found abandoned near a residence, raising serious concerns about

child welfare and community safety.

The grim discovery was made hours after the child was abandoned, drawing the attention of local residents. At the time of reporting, the infant was found deceased, leaving unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, whether it occurred before abandonment or due to exposure of the scorching sun.

The infant was identified as a male with a fair and endearing appearance, leaving some community members in awe of the child’s beauty. A nearby provision seller expressed profound sympathy for the child and questioned what could drive a mother to desert her newborn, even leaving the placenta behind.

While some residents speculated that the perpetrator might reside nearby, others believed the individual responsible may have come from a different neighborhood. Calls for police intervention and thorough investigations into this grievous crime resonated among the concerned community members.

One female resident claimed to have contacted the police, but their response had been delayed for hours. Eventually, a vigilante group arrived and took custody of the infant, while some of the residents concluded they were sent by the police.

In a heartbreaking twist, a woman recounted a previous incident where another baby had been abandoned in the same community. That child miraculously survived a severe fall, and heavy downpour of rain throughout that night, eventually being discovered by a compassionate young girl who heard her cries the following morning.

These incidents of newborn abandonment are becoming alarmingly frequent in the community, prompting urgent calls for increased security measures and authorities to address this growing concern.
