The Ogun State government has issued a stern warning to property owners who have constructed buildings on drainage channels within the state. The caution comes as the state takes action to address issues related to urban flooding. The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, delivered the directive during an inspection of urban flooding in the Ikenne Local Government Area.

Owners of structures that have been identified for potential demolition due to obstructing wastewater flow have been given an ultimatum to voluntarily remove these obstructions. If they do not comply promptly, the state government has emphasized its readiness to undertake the removal at the owners’ cost. Property owners who neglect to act in accordance with these directives may face charges for state intervention and may also be subjected to legal penalties for contravening environmental laws.

Highlighting concerns about the impact of urban flooding on road infrastructure, Commissioner Oresanya urged compliance with the ultimatum. He stressed that the state government remains committed to upholding environmental laws that strictly prohibit construction within flood-prone areas.

Commissioner Oresanya affirmed, “Any house owner that fails to comply with these directives…will be penalized.” He underscored the government’s dedication to protecting the integrity of roads that have been constructed using taxpayers’ funds and emphasized the need for responsible wastewater management.

Recognizing the evolving patterns of floods both nationally and globally, the commissioner announced plans to enhance the state’s drainage systems. He assured that the state government is actively working to expand the drainage network, enhancing its capabilities for flood mitigation and management.

Furthermore, Oresanya advised property owners who may be affected by the revised drainage plans to explore avenues for compensation, confirming the government’s commitment to implementing the updated drainage master plan while addressing legitimate concerns.
