Dr. Ibrahim Goni, the Conservator-General of the National Park Service, has revealed that the Federal Government is set to take control of ten new national parks between November and December 2023.
He made this announcement while meeting with nine commissioners representing the new national parks in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Goni, the formal handover of these parks to the Federal Government is expected to occur between November and December. This will pave the way for their inclusion in the national budget for the year 2024.
He explained that the approved national parks are currently undergoing gazetting by the Federal Ministry of Justice. Once gazetted, they attain full-fledged national park status. The final step will involve state governors transferring control of these parks to the Federal Government.
The purpose of the meeting was to provide stakeholders with an update on the progress of transferring and taking over these new national parks, he said.
