The International Traffic Awareness Initiative has expressed strong criticism for a recent special report in a national daily, which delved into alleged compromises in standards by Abuja Vehicle Inspection officers (VIO) and driving schools.
The group’s Publicity Director, Musa Abdullahi, voiced concerns regarding what he considered “unprofessionalism and misinformation” within the report.
Abdullahi’s primary grievance pertains to the report’s linking of the VIO with driving schools, a connection he found misleading. He asserted that all driving schools are duly certified, registered, and supervised by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), not the VIO.
According to Abdullahi’s statement, the management of driving school records falls under the purview of the FRSC. His assertion indicated that the VIO has encountered difficulties in accessing this data, hampering their driver’s license-related activities. While acknowledging that every organization might have a few “bad eggs,” he argued against tarnishing the entire institution due to isolated incidents.
Abdullahi also highlighted the proactive measures taken under the leadership of Abdul Lateef Bello, Director of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), to initiate extensive sensitization campaigns.
