The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as it has the potential to elevate him to national hero status.

In a statement, the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, urged all Igbo groups to cease acrimonious actions and offensive media wars against the Federal Government, emphasizing the need for unity and cooperation among Igbo leaders.

Isiguzoro stated, “President Tinubu has the opportunity to become a national hero by seizing this moment and releasing Nnamdi Kanu. Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Igbo people will forever be indebted to him if he resists all pressures and demonstrates compassion and forgiveness. As Nigerians, we should collectively forgive Nnamdi Kanu for his past actions and work towards a united and prosperous nation.”

Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested by the Nigerian government in June 2021 in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition, has been in detention, with his trial ongoing at the law court.
