The Federal Government is exploring the possibility of establishing an International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC) as part of its ongoing battle against the pervasive issue of corruption in the country.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, highlighted the potential benefits of such a court, particularly for addressing cases involving individuals and assets situated abroad.

Speaking in Abuja, Fagbemi emphasized the corrosive impact of corruption on Nigeria’s development, stability, and prosperity, underscoring the urgency of this issue. The establishment of an IACC could signify a significant step forward in Nigeria’s efforts to combat corruption, especially in the face of high-profile cases. However, the practical and political challenges involved in setting up such a court remain a complex and uncertain matter.

Corruption in Nigeria is not limited to specific cases but extends across various levels of government and the private sector. Transparency International’s 2022 report ranked Nigeria 154th out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perception Index, highlighting the nation’s struggle with graft. The report identified sectors such as public procurement, oil and gas, and the judiciary as particularly susceptible to corruption.
