There have recently been suspicions and claims flying around in both traditional and social media about President Bola Tinubu’s academic records. There have been suspicions that his academic credentials from Chicago State University were forged. These charges have caused intense debate and controversy. In this article, the Abuja City Journal will investigate the legality of President Bola Tinubu’s academic credentials and provide clarity.

Background

Tinubu is a major figure in Nigerian politics, having served in a variety of capacities throughout the years. His academic credentials, especially his claim to have attended Chicago State University, have recently come under suspicion.

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar filed a motion before Magistrate Jeffrey Gilbert of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, ordering Tinubu’s alma mater to provide all relevant and non-privileged documents to the applicant, Atiku.

On October 2, the University revealed the records, raising additional questions and suspicion about his qualifications.

Chicago State University

Chicago State University is an Illinois state university. It is a recognized institution with a long history of educating students from all over the world. To ascertain the authenticity of the allegations, it is necessary to confirm whether President Tinubu indeed attended this university and obtained the credentials he claims.

Verification Process

In court, the university stated that “after diligent search,” it was able to find and provide seven distinct certificates for the Bachelor of Science degree it issued in 1979.

Atiku had purportedly obtained the documents in order to compare and contrast them with the one supplied by Tinubu for the 2023 presidential election.

The university also gave Mr Tinubu’s team documents approved by a CSU official, Jamar C. Orr, a lawyer.

The university also produced, “after diligent search”, copies of three other diploma certificates issued to other students other than Mr Tinubu in 1979.

Public Statements from CSU

The Abuja City Journal compared the university’s official records to any public remarks made by President Tinubu about his education.

A statement by the University Registrar, Caleb Westberg, on the issue reveals: “There were materials in Mr. Tinubu’s records that show that he was a male. I see the application to CSU. Mr. Tinubu identified himself as a male. His letter of admission identified him as a male. It says: ‘Dear Mr. Tinubu’”

“We believe Bola Tinubu who attended CSU is the same person who is the president of Nigeria today.”

Also, the University in a statement in June 2022 read, in part, “Please be advised that Bola A. Tinubu attended Chicago State University from August 1977 to June 1979. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with Honors on June 22, 1979.”

Outcome of the Verification

As of this writing, no tangible proof has been given to clearly prove that President Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University were fabricated. The institution has not issued any public remarks contradicting his assertions, and no official legal action has been taken against him in this regard.

It is vital to highlight that allegations and rumors should not be treated as proven facts in the absence of specific evidence. Forgery allegations are serious, and it is critical to rely on confirmed and reputable sources for information.

Verdict

It is premature to assert that President Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University were fabricated in the absence of tangible evidence or formal pronouncements from the university. Allegations should be carefully investigated, and any charges of forgery or fraud should be based on solid facts rather than hearsay or unverified sources. When evaluating such allegations, it is critical to maintain a fair and evidence-based approach, especially when they include public people and their qualifications.
