As tensions rise in the aftermath of Palestinian terrorists in Gaza firing a fatal barrage of rockets and sending gunmen into Israeli territory in a massive escalation of the two sides’ long-running war, President Bola Tinubu’s unusual quiet on the topic raises questions. There has been no official remark or condemnation of the situation from the Nigerian leader in the twenty-four hours since the beginning of violence.

The extent and impact of Palestinian rocket strikes on southern Israel, as well as infiltrations into Israeli territory, have drawn international attention. Leaders from all around the world have spoken out in the midst of the ongoing conflict, denouncing the bloodshed and urging a peaceful end.

President Tinubu’s omission from the chorus of world leaders addressing the issue, on the other hand, has piqued the interest of both domestic and foreign onlookers. His viewpoint and position on such a delicate subject are highly anticipated as a major figure on the African continent and a member of the world community.

The Middle East scenario is complicated, with several actors participating and historical tensions at play. Given Nigeria’s standing on the international scene, President Tinubu’s response, when it comes, is likely to be taken seriously.

As the globe continues to observe the unfolding crisis between Israel and Palestine, many are left wondering when and how President Tinubu will address this critical international problem.

Speaking to Abuja City Journal, a staff of Ministry of Foreign Affairs who pleaded anonymity wondered the reason behind President Tinubu’s unusual silence on such a matter. He said it is largely unusual.

Speaking exclusively to Abuja City Journal, Dr. Ferdinand Ottoh, a senior lecturer in International Relations at the Department of Political Science at the University of Lagos, Akoka. According to him, the ethno-religious complexities of the Nigerian state may have accounted for the caution expressed by the Nigerian president.

He said, “Seeing that Nigeria has diplomatic relations with Israel, the President or the Foreign Affairs Ministry should have at least come up with a statement showing our neutrality on the issue. This does not show a nation posturing for a regional power.”
