In an appeal, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the upcoming 2023 general elections, has urged leaders, stakeholders, and residents of the South-East region to unite in their efforts to address the escalating security crisis plaguing the area.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra, delivered this message during the South-East Summit on Economy and Security held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. He emphasized that only collective and united actions could effectively combat the insecurity that has been severely impacting businesses and economic activities across the region.
The former governor highlighted the predominantly entrepreneurial nature of the South-East’s population, noting that this crisis had eroded their sources of livelihood, leaving them vulnerable to the activities of criminals terrorizing the region.
Obi called on South-East leaders to come together and formulate strategies to end the alarming insecurity, which he described as uncharacteristic of the region. He stressed the importance of this summit, focusing on security and its economic repercussions, as a crucial step toward finding lasting solutions.
Obi stated, “Our primary strength lies in commerce, and no economic activity can thrive in an atmosphere of insecurity. Through unity, trust, and collaboration, we can devise solutions to this foreign issue that has beset us.”
He commended the Southeast governors for initiating the summit and urged all participants, whether present in person or not, to voice their concerns, contribute ideas, and actively engage in the initiatives and actions agreed upon during the summit to restore peace and prosperity to the Southeast and Nigeria as a whole.
