The Sokoto State Police Command has taken the proactive step of banning processions as the Sokoto Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal prepares to deliver its judgment on Saturday.

The decision comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the election dispute between Malam Sa’idu Umar, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Governor Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The tribunal was called into action after Malam Sa’idu Umar filed a petition, contesting the victory of Governor Ahmed Aliyu in the March 18 election. As anticipation builds around the tribunal’s impending judgment, there have been concerns about the potential for unrest and disorder.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Ahmed Rufa’i, the police underscored their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. The statement acknowledged the significance of the occasion but stressed the necessity of prioritizing public safety above all else.

The ban on processions serves as a preventive measure to mitigate the risk of any potential disturbances or conflicts that could arise in the aftermath of the tribunal’s decision. The Sokoto State Police Command aims to maintain law and order and prevent any actions that may jeopardize the peace and security of the state.
