State chapters and affiliate unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are actively preparing for the possibility of declaring a nationwide strike. This action follows the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government to provide palliatives to alleviate the challenges brought about by the recent removal of fuel subsidies.
Previously, organized labor initiated a two-day warning strike as a means of emphasizing their demands. Following this warning strike, the NLC issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government to address their concerns.
As the ultimatum reached its deadline on Friday, the NLC has scheduled an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council for the upcoming Tuesday at noon. During this virtual meeting, the council is expected to determine its next course of action.
In a notice dated September 22, 2023, the congress’ General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, conveyed the significance of attendance to the Presidents, General Secretaries, and Treasurers of its affiliated unions, stating, “Your attendance at the meeting will be of utmost importance.”
The fate of the nationwide strike and its potential impact on various sectors of the country’s economy now hangs in the balance, as labor unions await further directives following the emergency meeting.
