The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has revealed the Federal Government’s ambitious plans to significantly boost Nigeria’s electricity generation. He announced the goal of achieving 20,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2026 and a substantial target of 60,000MW by 2060.

Speaking in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday, September 22, the minister outlined the government’s vision, stating, “Like I told you, it’s an aspiration for Nigeria to have a minimum of 60,000 megawatts of power by 2060; that is 60 gigawatts. And 2030 is the medium-term objective of achieving 30,000 megawatts of power. But like I mentioned in one of the programs I attended, given the experiences of other countries who have achieved over 100,000 megawatts within 40 to 50 years, this is not an ambitious target for Nigeria; we can easily achieve it.”

The minister further emphasized that Nigeria has specific targets for transmission capacity, distribution capacity, and power generation capacity. He projected that by 2026, the country should be capable of generating 20,000MW of electricity. He also highlighted the forthcoming establishment of two additional power substations in the next few months, courtesy of the presidential power initiative of the Federal Government.

These ambitious goals signify the government’s commitment to addressing the country’s energy needs and driving economic growth through enhanced power generation and distribution.
