The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has fulfilled his promise to revoke land titles for undeveloped properties in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. Since his assumption of office, the former Governor of Rivers State has consistently warned that unused land would be taken back from its owners, regardless of their social status.
Wike’s determination to tackle the issue of unutilized land also extends to the demolition of buildings and structures that have been illegally erected in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Among the prominent Nigerians affected by the recent revocations is Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential candidate of the Labour Party. The total number of land titles revoked stands at 167 plots.
Other notable individuals who have had their land titles revoked include former Senate Chief Whip Udoma Udoma, former Cross River Governor Senator Liyel Imoke, the first Minister of Niger Delta Ufot Ekaette, and the late publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Sam Nda-Isaiah, among others.
The FCT Administration issued a notice on Thursday night, stating that the revocations were made due to the failure of plot allottees to develop their properties. The notice, signed by Permanent Secretary Olusade Adesola, cited the provisions of Section 28(5)(a) & (b) of the Land Use Act 1978 as the basis for the revocations.
