Governor Dapo Abiodun has declared a resolute fight against cultism in Ogun State in reaction to the recent rise in cult-related violence in Sagamu. He stated that his administration intends to pass legislation that will inflict the death sentence on those engaging in cult operations within the state.
The Governor made this declaration on Wednesday at the Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu during a meeting with Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the Paramount Ruler of Remoland, and his chiefs.
Expressing his sympathy for the law-abiding citizens of Sagamu and the paramount ruler, Governor Abiodun emphasized his commitment to bringing those responsible for heinous crimes to justice. He stated that it is well within his authority as the governor to implement the death penalty for such offenders, with the aim of making them fully comprehend the consequences of their actions.
The governor further revealed his plans to mobilize key security personnel, including the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the State Service (DSS), the Commander of the Civil Defence, and the AMOTEKUN Commander, to Sagamu to tackle the issue at its roots. Governor Abiodun also stressed the importance of local leaders and traditional rulers in providing intelligence support to address the problem effectively.
Governor Abiodun announced a stricter stance on those involved in criminal activities, no longer referring to them as cultists but categorizing them as murderers. He pledged to administer punishments commensurate with the seriousness of their crimes, acknowledging the economic damage such activities inflict on the state.
In a stern warning to parents, Governor Abiodun emphasized that decisive actions would be taken against anyone caught in the act, leaving no room for leniency in addressing the issue of cult-related violence.
