The First Lady of Ekiti State, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has strongly denounced the act of jungle justice inflicted on a woman accused of stealing yams in Ado Ekiti. The victim was subjected to brutality, physical harm, and public humiliation, with videos of her nakedness circulated on social media platforms. Dr. Oyebanji decried this treatment as a violation of the woman’s human dignity, stressing that grievances should be resolved through lawful means rather than resorting to self-help.
In a statement from her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Odunayo Ogunmola, the First Lady has mobilized her office’s Gender Unit to collaborate with the Office of the Attorney-General to ensure that justice is served for the victim.
Meanwhile, two individuals, Owoseni Adefolaran and Oluwatade Olaleye, have been remanded by an Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court for their alleged involvement in the jungle justice incident. They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. The alleged offences occurred on September 5 at Aduramigba Community, Afao Road, Ado Ekiti.
The defense counsel requested bail for the accused, arguing that they played roles in the community’s security and administration. However, the State Counsel, Mrs. Shirley Atane, opposed bail, citing the circumstances of the offences and the involvement of multiple individuals, some of whom are still at large.
Chief Magistrate Oluwasanmi agreed with the prosecution, denying bail to the accused persons. The case has been adjourned to September 19 for the continuation of the trial.
