Nigeria has plunged into darkness once again as the national grid system, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from Osogbo in Osun State, suffered a major collapse.
Early today, a thorough check revealed that the grid’s power production plummeted to a mere 273 megawatts of electricity, sourced from only two of the over 27 electricity generation plants.
This incident comes just a week after TCN celebrated 400 days of grid stability, which raised questions about the reliability of such claims.
Several Distribution Companies confirmed that the grid went offline at 00:41 AM, resulting in most of their feeders being non-operational.
As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, only five generating plants remained operational. Afam VI generated 0.70MW, Dadinkowa had 0.00MW, Ibom Power produced 32.90MW, Jebba contributed 240MW, while Olorunsogo was connected to the grid but not generating any power.
Around 1:00 AM, the total power on the grid dwindled to a mere 35MW, indicating a severe system collapse. Subsequently, it slightly recovered to 193MW by 3:00 AM before reaching 273MW at the time of this report.
The TCN has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this development.
