Nigeria’s political landscape was marked by a somber note as news of the passing of the revered Oloye Akintola Williams, one of the nation’s foremost accountants and elder statesmen, reached the public. As tributes pour in from across the nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday expressed his profound sorrow at the loss of this iconic figure who played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s economic and political history.
Late Chief Williams passed away on Monday at the age of 104 years old on Monday.
In a statement released and signed by Mr Ajuri Ngelale the Special Adviser to the President on Media and publicity, President Tinubu sympathizes with the Government and people of Lagos and Ogun States, the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN), the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and other financial institutions that were founded by the centurion, who had lived an admirable life of charity with an impactful influence on future generations.
Tinubu affirms that Oloye Williams epitomized integrity, resilience and resourcefulness which was amply demonstrated when he established the first accounting firm, Akintola Williams & Co (Deliotte & Touche), by an African, in 1952, which inspired self-confidence in a generation of professionals who would make further impact in strengthening transparency and compentence in the Accounting profession.
Chief Williams was the first African to qualify as a chartered accountant in 1949, marking a historic milestone in Nigeria’s professional and educational landscape. Throughout his illustrious career, Williams held various prestigious positions, including serving as the Chairman of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank and as a founding member of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
His contributions extended beyond the realm of finance. Williams was an advocate for good governance and accountability in public service. His efforts helped shape Nigeria’s economic policies and fiscal discipline, earning him respect not only within Nigeria but also on the global stage.
