In response to the brutal killing of SP Bako Angbashim, the former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ahoada Division in Rivers State, the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Dr. Solomon Arase, have both called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

On September 8, 2023, while he was conducting an operation there, the late SP Bako Angbashim was subjected to a humiliating and horrific murder, along with mutilation, by hardened criminals in the Ahoada region of Rivers State.

According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force PRO, the IGP has ordered a prompt investigation and prosecution of all individuals involved in this heinous and barbaric act. He emphasised that such actions not only damage the reputation of our country but also show a lack of patriotism and flagrant illegality. The IGP made it clear that such crimes against any officers of the law in Nigeria would not be tolerated and that those responsible would be subject to the full force of the law. In expressing his sincere condolences to SP Bako Angbashim’s grieving family, committed coworkers, and friends, he urged them to emulate his commitment, humility, and selflessness.

Meanwhile, PSC chairman Dr. Solomon Arase strongly condemned the cowardly and wicked murder of the late DPO, who was ambushed along with his team while attempting to quell a violent attack by a dangerous gang of cultists in the Odumude area of Ahoada East. He asserted that the brave officer’s death will not dampen the unwavering determination of our police officers in the fight against social disorders. Dr. Arase pledged that the commission will utilize its constitutional authority to assist and motivate the police in capturing and bringing the criminals to justice. He also expressed support for the implementation of proactive intelligence gathering and sharing to prevent similar ambushes in the future.

Arase emphasized that the sacrifice of Angbashim, known for his bravery and dedication to duty, will not be in vain. He encouraged his fellow officers to view his death while in active service as a catalyst to enhance the security landscape. Additionally, the PSC chairman commended the governor of Rivers State for promptly announcing a financial reward for anyone aiding in the arrest of the culprits. He concluded by praying for the slain police officer’s family, hoping they find the strength to bear this irreparable loss.
