The Kebbi State Chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced its intention to withdraw from the planned Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warning strike.
Alhaji Atiku Alkali, the union’s state leader, has cited a direction from the union’s national body in support of continuing work rather than taking part in the warning strike.
He emphasized that the national TUC has endorsed dialogue as the preferred approach to address the dispute between the federal government and Nigerian workers.
Alkali stated, “We have chosen not to join the NLC warning strike. We have embraced dialogue as the solution to the issues arising from the fuel subsidy removal, even as we empathize with the workers and our affiliates who are feeling the impact. The best course of action is through dialogue to alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. Consequently, all our channels and affiliates remain operational.”
Alkali also urged their members to maintain peace and adhere to the law. He assured that efforts were underway to ensure that the federal government addresses the demands of Nigerians by providing the necessary resources for a comfortable life in light of the subsidy removal. He pledged to keep members and the public informed about TUC’s next steps in Kebbi state.
The decision by the TUC to withdraw from the NLC’s warning strike has raised eyebrows in certain quarters.
The withdrawal of a state-level union from the NLC’s strike might be seen as a setback for the overall momentum of the industrial action.
