An Abuja-based non-governmental organization (NGO), Save Our Heritage Initiative (SOHI), has issued a call for a renewed dedication to safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities.

The CEO of the organization, Ms. May Ikokwu, conveyed this message during an interview in Abuja.

This statement comes as part of the observance of the 2023 edition of the International Day for Indigenous People (IDIP), which is celebrated globally on August 9th each year. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the rights of indigenous populations around the world and acknowledge their contributions, particularly in areas like environmental preservation.

The theme for the 2023 edition is “Indigenous Youths as Agents of Change for Self-determination.”

Ms. Ikokwu expressed concern about the challenges faced by indigenous groups, emphasizing that they often face unjust disadvantages and oppression due to their non-dominant status. She highlighted instances in areas such as Nasarawa and Zamfara where illegal mining activities have led to the forced displacement of indigenous communities from their ancestral lands.

She stressed that the resources present on their lands should not result in the dehumanization and displacement of these people.
Ms. Ikokwu urged government authorities at all levels to take a stand and defend the rights of indigenous communities across the country.

She noted that indigenous populations encounter difficulties such as economic disparity, limited social protection, and inadequate political representation. Despite making up less than five percent of the global population, indigenous individuals account for 15 percent of the world’s poorest.
Ms. Ikokwu concluded by emphasizing the need for comprehensive support and protection for indigenous communities. Doing so, she asserted, would promote inclusivity and help rebuild their confidence in the societal system.
