Achunike Okafor, a Nigerian student, has been honored at Science Park High School in Newark, New Jersey, U.S., for his exceptional academic performance. The 18-year-old received an International Baccalaureate diploma with a remarkable 4.625-grade-point average, setting a new record at the school.
Okafor’s GPA is not only the highest among his fellow graduates in the Class of 2023, but it also stands as the highest-ever recorded in the city’s public school district, comprising 2,649 students.
His outstanding academic achievements caught the attention of prestigious universities, leading to over 40 scholarship offers from renowned institutions such as Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Princeton, Penn State, Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, and Rutgers.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunities presented to him, Okafor said, “I am grateful for the opportunities to attend such esteemed universities and to represent my family and community. I do not take lightly the privilege and responsibility to be among the few individuals selected for such honors.”
The young scholar has set his sights on attending Harvard University to pursue a degree in neuroscience, a field he is passionate about.
Science Park’s Principal, Darlene Gearhart, commended Okafor’s exceptional qualities, stating, “There’s absolutely nothing average about him. Achunike is an extraordinary person. He’s humble, driven, and industrious. He has always been a great kid and is always eager to learn.”
Superintendent of Schools, Roger León, expressed pride in Achunike’s achievements, noting that they serve as a source of inspiration for the school, district, and the Newark community. “His achievements are a testament to his perseverance, resilience, and dedication to excellence. We wish him continued success at Harvard and look forward to more accomplishments from him in the future,” León said.
Achunike’s father, Godfrey Okafor, a high school math teacher, expressed his family’s pride in their son’s accomplishments, emphasizing the value they place on education. He mentioned that his five other children are also pursuing higher education, with studies in computer engineering, pharmacology, nursing, and law.
Outside the classroom, Achunike showcased his leadership abilities as a co-founder of the Science Club, vice president of the Junior Student Council, and the Stand & Deliver Club. He also served as president of the Future Educators Club and Black Student Union, co-captain of the robotics team, and treasurer of the Environmental Club.
With his dedication and determination, Achunike Okafor has proven to be an exemplary student, and his accomplishments are sure to pave the way for a bright future ahead.
